My Rating

★★★★★ (Enjoyment 5/5)
★★★☆☆ (Content 3/5)

Steins;Gate is my second-favorite anime of all time, but it is not for the faint of heart, which is part of why I’ve created this Steins;Gate parent guide. The anime contains high stakes (especially in the second half), death, murder, traumatic experiences, and PTSD among other content concerns outlined in detail below.

How to Use this Steins;Gate Parents’ Guide

We know this post is long and may seem overwhelming. Renewed Mind Reviews strives to offer content guides that are more detailed than your average guide because we know firsthand how important understanding a story’s content is. However, that means this post is long.

To help you navigate this post, a basic summary of the major content categories is provided in the “Content Overview” section. This contains very brief answers to the most common questions viewers may ask.

The last section of this post is our full parents’ guide, which provides bulleted examples of what sexual content, violence, language, intense scenes, spiritual concerns, and miscellaneous concerns occur in the anime.

Our table of contents above should help you navigate the major sections and questions easily.

Steins;Gate Content Overview

Is Steins;Gate safe for Christians?

With wisdom and discernment, Steins;Gate may be safe for mature Christians.

Why is Steins;Gate rated 14+?

Our Steins;Gate parents’ guide at the bottom of this post provides additional details about the anime’s sexual themes and nudity.

Steins;Gate Parents’ Guide (Anime)

Sex, Romance, and Nudity in Steins;Gate

I know there’s a lot in this section. Steins;Gate is often considered a fairly tame & non-fanservicey anime. There are no true sex scenes other than in Episode 19 where someone tries to make it look like he’s having intercourse (he isn’t). There are some non-sexual examples of nudity & some suggestive comments/innuendo, as well as a few examples of particularly well-endowed characters who may be emphasized. Examples below (but please do not be overwhelmed; for adults, the content in this section may not be a deal breaker).

Nudity & Immodesty in Steins;Gate
  • The intro shows naked bodies. They are somewhat easy to miss and not super detailed. If you skip the intro, you will miss it.
  • We see Makise depicted nude at the very end of the end credits. Her undetailed breasts are visible.
  • Throughout the show, Daru wears a shirt that is too small, so it often shows bits of skin. His butt crack is also visible on one or more occasions.
  • The thinker statue is shown.
  • Ruka’s shirt shows his back.
  • Faris has (slight) cleavage in normal clothes. Another character shows cleavage in Episode 18.
  • Characters wear short clothing, including short skirts for school uniforms. Moeka, for example, wears a short skirt (emphasized) with a slit. A few characters are large-breasted.
  • Episode 4: Kurisu is shown in bed. She is wearing a long shirt with no pants. You can see her underwear/legs.
  • Episode 6: After the characters discuss their accomplishments, Okabe is shown naked. No male sexual part shown, but it is full-body nudity.
  • Episode 8: Mayuri (girl) makes Ruka (male) cosplay. They go into the changing room. Characters say things like “watch the hands,” “it’s like yuri times infinity,” etc.
  • Episode 8: Ruka is shown in a very, very short outfit. Daru seems into it.
  • Episode 10: Characters look at a swimsuit magazine and talk about going to the beach. Some sexual innuendo talked about: “Not curvy enough,” “Small boobies will have their day,” “School swimsuits for the win,” as well as “Us and the perv brigade.” Kurisu doesn’t want to go to the beach with the guys and wants it to be girls only. (Spoiler) Okabe suggests this omits Ruka. Everyone gets upset because, in this timeline, Ruka is a girl.
  • Episode 11: A female character (Suzuha) takes off her jacket. She is wearing shorts and a sports bra. She throws her jacket on her male employer’s (Mr. Braun’s) head. Her butt is emphasized by the camera. She is trying to use “womanly charms.” She ends up being punished by being forced (by Mr. Braun) to dress like that all day.
  • Episode 11: Kurisu and Mayuri are about to take a shower. Part of Kurisu’s chest (not detailed) is visible; Mayuri’s shoulders are naked. No detail. Okabe was unable to contact them, so he panicked and walked in on the girls. You can see the back and outline of the breasts. Not super graphic, but they are still clearly naked. Mayuri admits that she didn’t expect Okabe to walk in on them (though Daru is another story). Important context: Okabe thought Mayuri was in danger. He was not trying to see them naked.
  • Episode 17: Faris’ dad is shown shirtless in a photo.
  • Episode 18: A hentai game strategy guide appears. The girls on the cover look indecent. Girls with cleavage and underwear are shown on Daru’s computer and elsewhere.
  • Episode 19: A magazine showing a girl in a bikini.
  • Episode 21: A cosplay is very immodest and shows parts of cleavage/other suggestive things.
  • Episode 21: A character goes through Daru’s books, which have girls in very immodest outfits. Most likely porn.
  • Episode 21: For a brief second, a sketch (drawing) is shown of naked girls. Breasts visible. Very brief.
  • Episode 22: A female character takes off her jacket. She has a wet, white shirt on, so her bra shows.
  • Episode 25: A weather girl wears a shirt that shows her belly. She has cleavage and large breasts.
  • Episode 25: Mayuri’s belly is shown.
  • Episode 25: Kurisu is working as a maid at a cafe.
  • Episode 25: Ruka is shown in a girly outfit surrounded by paparazzi.
Suggestive Comments/Scenarios in Steins;Gate
  • Daru has a “2D Harem.” He is “cheating” on said harem with a real girl.
  • Many characters blush throughout the series.
  • Guys and girls hug.
  • Characters touch/hold hands.
  • Characters use bananas as a test subject, and they turn green and slimy.
  • A Maid cafe (where servers cosplay as maids) is mentioned/visited throughout the show. No sexual acts (maid cafes aren’t known for those).
  • At times, the camera framing may emphasize characters’ crotches.

  • Mention of “virgin.”
  • Kissing occurs on multiple occasions.
  • There are cucumber (Eps 6, 10) and banana (Eps 1, 3) based innuendos.
  • Episode 1: Suggestive jokes are made, such as calling bananas “wet and floppy.” Daru wants Mayuri (high school age) to speak this way. She’s super naive, and Okabe wants to put a stop to it.
  • Episode 2: A male character grabs a female character, grabs her hair, pokes her, and starts opening her coat. He gets pushed. Context: he thought she was dead, so he’s trying to figure out what’s going on.
  • Episode 3: A character mentions a “clever excuse to go poking around in my coat.”

  • Episode 5: Mention of joining Daru’s harem. Joke about whispering in Daru’s ear.

  • Episode 6: Mention of cucumber & insertion.
  • Episode 6: The camera focuses on Moeka’s butt & emphasizes her body. Daru calls her a “lovely lady,” flirts with her, and checks her out.
  • Episode 7: Mayuri does a breathy “Aha,” and Daru wants her to repeat it (innuendo).
  • Episode 8: Kurisu does “field research” by touching Ruka’s chest. She finally realizes that he is male, not female.
  • Episode 8: Mention of Faris being “at Daru’s command” (talking about turning the phone wave into mind control).
  • Episode 8: Mention of Daru’s hard drive (he has questionable hobbies, to say the least, so his hard drive is likely very problematic).
  • Episode 8: Okabe looks at Ruka’s chest to figure out her gender. Kurisu thinks he’s a “creeper.”
  • Episode 9: Faris calls Okabe her “darling” and acts a bit seductive.
  • Episode 9: Daru almost makes comments about Mayuri being in her school uniform—it’s as if he’s into it.
  • Episode 10: Okabe touches Ruka, looking for a male private part. There isn’t one. Context (with spoilers): Ruka was born male, but after sending a D-mail to try to change his gender, it worked.
  • Episode 10: Okabe speculates that a character has an “unfortunate birthmark marring your hindquarters.”
  • Episode 13: Okabe and Mayuri are going on a trip, and Ruka seems to think it’s a bit embarrassing (probably because they’re going alone?). Okabe and Mayuri are very close childhood friends and are not lovers.
  • Episode 15: Mayuri says that Suzuha and Daru “Make a pretty good match.”
  • Episode 15: Daru invites Suzuha to help him in the time machine. He comments on how warm it is, but suggests they strip down to their underwear to fix the situation. (Spoiler: this is extra weird because Daru is actually related to her, although neither of them is aware of the relation at this point).
  • Episode 16: (Spoiler) A character tells his daughter, “Guess you gotta call me big daddy from now on.”
  • Episode 16: A character asks if his future wife “is smoking hot,” and emphasizes wanting her to have a “huge rack,” be “short,” and have a “babyface.”

  • Episode 18: Mention of “wine and dine a girl.”

  • Episode 18: Daru wants the “sexy details,” & mentions how many “babes” he has made out with.
  • Episode 18: Lothario.
  • Episode 18: Kurisu and Okabe talk about virginity and insult one another. “As dedicated to science as virginity,” says Kurisu about Okabe. He replies, “Oh, and I suppose you’re experienced. Pray tell, how many wayward ships have you coerced into your port?” Someone is “No less chaste than the rest of us seekers” and doesn’t have insight into said topic. Kurisu says she hasn’t “Ever gone all the way.”
  • Episode 19: Okabe fights Moeka to get her phone for a D-mail. She has cleavage. He pins her down on the ground, and they wrestle; he’s on top, and it is very suggestive. He kisses her to make it look like they are having sex. A neighbor comes to check, so he tries to make it seem like they are going at it to hide the truth.
  • Episode 21: Characters joke about Ruka “in a wildly inappropriate cosplay.”
  • Episode 22: (Spoiler) Kurisu blushes; she and Okabe talk about feelings. He says he loves her and asks her “what her heart says right now.” She blushes A LOT, and has him close her eyes, and it cuts. However, this parallels the first kiss, so it’s likely they kissed. However, it’s left open-ended.
  • Episode 25: The characters discuss sleeping arrangements. Okabe and Mayuri are childhood friends, so she says they’ve shared rooms/had sleepovers together. Okabe tells Kurisu to “Get your mind out of the gutter.” They also suggest Okabe and Ruka together (as you may recall, Ruka likes Okabe but is a male). Eventually, Okabe and Daru share, and Mayuri and Ruka share.
