Snow White with the Red Hair Volume 2 Review: Synopsis

As a new court herbalist apprentice, Shirayki has a lot to learn. Her new mentor, Ryu, proves to be a very knowledgeable teacher.

Meanwhile, a fort under Zen’s jurisdiction has grown suspiciously unresponsive, and Zen decides to check on it himself.

However, he quickly discovers that he cannot solve the fort’s problem on his own, so he must turn to a trusted ally for help.

In Volume 2 of Sorata Akiduki’s romance manga, Shirayuki and Zen grow closer.

Snow White with the Red Hair Volume 2 Review

Snow White with the Red Hair Volume 2 continues the story of Shirayuki, an herbalist, and Zen, a prince.

Christian Review: Tone & Content

Snow White with the Red Hair Volume 2 maintains the fairly wholesome tone established in Volume 1 of the manga series. There are certainly stakes and risky events, but Zen and Shirayuki remain heartwarmingly loyal to one another.

This is only Volume 2, and it’s beyond clear that Shirayuki and Zen care deeply for one another.

Connect Us: A One Shot by Sorata Akiduki

At the end of Snow White with the Red Hair Volume 2, there’s a short story written by Sorata Akiduki titled “Connect Us.” It follows a deceased boy named Toshiya who returns to earth and watches his two best friends process life without him. It deals with regret, grief, and moving on after loss.

It does contain spiritual elements: Toshiya goes to the afterlife and then visits earth as a ghost. Skipping this story—if the spiritual elements make you uncomfortable—will not cause you to miss any of the Snow White with the Red Hair plot since “Connect Us” is a standalone story.

I do want to point out that, right after “Connect Us” ends, there is a short side story about Snow White with the Red Hair, so you’ll definitely want to read that.

Christian Review: Zen’s Character Development

In the volume, we learn that Zen is over Fort Luxado, a small fort that has gone quiet for unknown reasons. Zen has some sort of special attachment to this fort—he often visits and spends time with the soldiers.

Zen, despite the risks, chooses to go investigate himself. As a prince, he could have ordered others to go and investigate, but he chooses to get personally involved.

*Spoiler* Quickly, we learn that there’s some sort of mysterious sickness impacting the soldiers at the fort. At first, he refuses to leave them despite the risk of coming down with the illness himself, but after being reminded of his position and pushed by those who care about his welfare, he relents.

*Spoiler* Instead, Shirayuki investigates, cares for the sick, and finally discovers what is causing everyone to fall ill.

*Spoiler* Considering how deeply Zen cares for Shirayuki and how determined he was to investigate the fort himself, it might seem bizarre that he’s okay with putting her at risk, but it’s actually a wise decision. As the prince, he needs to protect himself, not out of selfishness, but out of duty. Secondly, Shirayuki is an herbalist—it’s her job to care for the sick. And, Zen doesn’t abandon the fort after Shirayuki is there—he sticks around and assists where he can, which includes going after bandits.

We already knew from Volume 1 that Zen doesn’t care about status—he cares about everyone, including the commoner herbalist Shirayuki. In Volume 2, he even gives Ryu, a young herbalist, advice.

Other Notable Events in Volume 2 *Spoilers*

Other than Zen’s character development, a few other notable events occur in Volume 2. Shirayuki starts her job as an herbalist and meets her boss, a 12-year-old boy named Ryu who is extremely knowledgeable in herbalism. The two start off a bit roughly before becoming friends. Their relationship is sweet, and it encourages Ryu to grow in emotional and relational intelligence.

We also meet Zen’s older brother, Prince Izana. He is very skeptical of Shirayuki, and she is a bit informal with him, even calling him “Zen’s big brother.” Shirayuki will definitely need to learn court etiquette if she plans to continue in her friendship with Zen.

Volume 3 promises to be very interesting, and hints at Prince Raj’s potential return.
