Synopsis: What is A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring about?
“Oops, that wasn’t supposed to happen.”
When Takumi finds himself dead due to the mistake of an inept “god,” he is granted the chance to live in another world, and a fantasy one at that! He comes into the world highly skilled and knowledgeable (thanks to the “god” trying to make it up to him), but his life takes a quick turn when he meets abandoned twins in the forest. They immediately win him over, and he discovers that they are surprisingly capable. And that is how Takumi starts to raise kids while adventuring.
A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring Christian Review
A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring combines comedy, familial love, and adventure. If I ever made a list of “clean anime,” this anime would be on my list. The animation is fun and filled with bright, bold colors (the twins literally have vibrant blue hair. The show is entertaining and wholesome, and I absolutely wish they would make A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring Season 2 because it’s that cute.
A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring English Dub Cast
Matt Shipman (Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, Link Click) voices Takumi Kayano. Kiane Chula King is Elena and Lara Woodhull (Nina the Starry Bride, Assassination Classroom, A Sign of Affection) voices Alan.
The cast does an amazing job embodying the characters.
The Characters: Side Characters
I’m going to start by discussing and highlighting some side characters before jumping into main character profiles.
Some of the soldiers in the story are selfish and unkind, but most of the characters are kind and fun.
Cedric Risner, for example, welcomes Takumi to his city, and Isaac Risner befriends Takumi and the children.
The Characters: Alan and Elena
Overall, Alan and Elena (the twins) are very well-behaved, and though they are initially timid and shy around new people, they start to break out of their shell thanks to Takumi’s love and care. The twins can be forgiving and generously share their food with those who once caused them harm. They are curious, loving, and extremely capable in combat.
Alan and Elena aren’t perfect. The twins sometimes continue to push until Takumi gives them permission to do something they shouldn’t, but overall, they are very respectful of Takumi and listen to his wisdom, and when they don’t, they learn from their mistakes. They are also very quick to forgive.
The Characters: Takumi
Takumi is a fantastic character. He’s not perfect (Takumi lies to the guild about how he got to the underwater labyrinth, and he’s sometimes slow to forgive), but he’s loving, kind, and thoughtful.
Although he’s experienced quite a bit of chaos in a short period of time—a “god” accidentally kills him before he’s sent to a fantasy world—he doesn’t let his problems keep him from showing kindness and care to others.
He takes on the role of caregiver for Alan and Elena, treating the twins as if they’re his own flesh and blood. Takumi puts the twins above himself and is extremely patient and loving; Alan and Elena are blessed to have him as their big brother.
He’s also a fantastic teacher. When Alan and Elena want to taste the ocean water against his warnings, he allows them a small taste and uses it as a teaching moment.
Takumi’s character reflects many character traits. He is selfless (1 Corinthians 10:24) and thinks of others before himself (Philippians 2:3-4). The fantasy world follows the rule of “finders keepers”; yet, when Takumi finds a lost ship in the bottom of the ocean, he returns it to its owner instead of keeping it for himself. He shares his recipes with others and lets others profit off of them. He cares for the twins, who are practically orphans (James 1:27). Takumi is patient, kind, gentle with the children (Galatians 5:22-23).
He doesn’t seek fame or fortune and willingly shares with others, helping those in need. Takumi realizes that violence isn’t always the answer, and teaches Alan and Elena about what it means to be a family.
Family in A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring
In Episode 9 of the anime, Takumi explains family to Alan and Elena. He says that “a family has a mom and a dad” and explains that “after they got together, the two of you were born.”
I absolutely love this scene because it supports the Biblical concept of marriage and unity between husband and wife. Takumi notes that “being born is a wonderful thing.”
Takumi is grateful for his life, a viewpoint becoming less and less common these days.
Alan, Elena, and Takumi truly act like a family. Takumi raises the children as his own, loving and cherishing them.
Slavery in Raising Kids While Adventuring *Spoiler*
Initially, Alan and Elena were in the possession of a slaver. The anime portrays this slaver as cruel and inhumane. He even uses Alan and Elena as bait to stop monsters from pursuing him and his other slaves!
Thankfully, he doesn’t get Alan and Elena back.
Polytheism and Fantasy in Raising Kids While Adventuring
Takumi’s new world is polytheistic. We see many different deities in the anime with differing levels of competency.
The god who accidentally kills Takumi, Sylphyryll (also known as Syl), is highly incompetent, a direct contrast to the God of the Bible. Syl is a nice character, but he’s imperfect. God knows the number of our days (Psalm 139:16) and He doesn’t make mistakes (Numbers 23:19). Thankfully, The One True God we know as Christians is fully competent, loving, and offers us eternal life.
Additionally, there is a vampire character, mermaid characters, and other fantasy creatures, and magic does occur.
Contracted Beasts in Raising Kids While Adventuring
Throughout the anime, Takumi gains four different contracted beasts, who act like pets and assist in fighting and adventuring. These contracted beasts—Feat, Joule, Vector, and Volt—are gifts from various “gods” as thanks for Takumi’s help solving different problems in the world. (Of course, from a Christian perspective, God doesn’t need help from humans because He is fully capable).
Relationships in Raising Kids While Adventuring
A Journey Through Another World: Raising Kids While Adventuring, doesn’t focus on romance. Takumi’s priority is providing for Alan and Elena. However, some mild references to romance occur (like mentioning aphrodisiacs) and there’s a painting with an immodest woman.
There is a moment that hints on homosexuality before shutting it down. A soldier has a crush on his captain (a guy). However, the captain does not share those feelings and vehemently denies any homosexual romance.
