Is it possible to be a Christian anime fan? Are there resources for parents who have children interested in anime? Today, I want to highlight various creators and ministries in the anime community. My post is written from a Christian perspective, but I believe these resources may be helpful for non-believers and parents exploring anime.

Introduction

For parents and Christians, anime can be a concerning topic, and for good reason. It has an infamous reputation for being violent, sexual, and inappropriate. However, the term anime is used to describe Japanese animation, which is as diverse as any other kind of animation. And yes, anime can be violent and sexual, but not every anime is.

There are Christian Anime Fans…

GotQuestions, one of my favorite ministries, acknowledges that some Christians enjoy anime:

…[T]here are strong Christians who enjoy the medium. They appreciate the style, the futuristic settings, and the imaginative storytelling in anime. And they might see and be encouraged by some biblically approved themes present in anime such as self-sacrifice, kindness, loyalty, endurance, and courage.

I personally have found anime to be a fantastic storytelling medium. As someone who loves stories, I find inspiration and enjoyment in the anime genre.

However, as a Christian who enjoys anime, I have chosen to navigate the medium selectively. I am picky about what I watch and there are many shows and genres that I refuse to touch because I don’t believe they honor God and will help me in my walk with Christ.

…But Not Every Christian is Okay with Anime

GotQuestions also acknowledges that not every Christian is okay with anime:

Other Christians, however, might decide that something with so many lurid landmines is not worth the time required to navigate it safely. Or they’ve been convicted against placing themselves in positions to be exposed to something that could hurt their spiritual walk.

And honestly, I totally get it. Navigating anime safely as a Christian is difficult. Japan and the United States are very different countries with different laws and beliefs. Shintoism and Buddhism influences are common in Japan, whereas Judeo-Christian beliefs heavily influence the the United States.

My goal here isn’t to change your mind about anime. I’m not here to defend it; I respect everyone’s convictions and I want you to make the decision that’s wisest and most God-honoring for you and your family.

However, if you are hoping to navigate anime safely, or you are a parent with a child anime fan who has no idea where to start, I want to help you by providing the tools you need to navigate anime in a safer way.

The Christian Anime Community

I want to highlight the Christian anime community today. When I first started Renewed Mind Reviews, the Christian otaku community welcomed me with open arms. There are so many inspiring people in the Christian otaku community; they’re such a great support system.

There are so many ministries and like-minded individuals in the anime community. Community is so important and surrounding yourself with like minded individuals is so beneficial.

Below is a list of some of my favorite Christian anime resources and ministries.

I want to preface that I’m not an expert in all of their content and don’t necessarily agree with everything they say or believe, but our common denominator is Jesus and anime.

The Bible

Any Christian interested in anime needs to spend time in God’s Word first and foremost. The Bible is useful for navigating everyday life. 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV) says “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,” and if we believe this to be true, we should be spending time in God’s Word.

When it comes to navigating anime safely–whether you’re a parent with a child interested in anime or a Christian anime fan who wants to honor God, we need to know what God says about good and evil; otherwise, we won’t be equipped to make wise choices on what we watch.

Compare everything to Scripture and remember to follow the ideas expressed in Philippians 4:8 (NIV) “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Beneath the Tangles: A Christian Anime Ministry

I love and appreciate the work that Beneath the Tangles (BtT) does for the otaku community. Their mission is “connecting anime and christianity in genuine community.” Beneath the Tangles has a newsletter, a website with tons of anime and manga reviews, and a Discord server.

I am actually a staff member with BtT and write a monthly devotional for Above Anime, their newsletter.

However, Renewed Mind Reviews is not affiliated with, operated by, or officially associated with Beneath the Tangles. This site is run independently.

Gabriel and the Guardians

Gabriel and the Guardians (GATG) is actually an anime inspired show created by Colossul Studios and currently distributed by Angel Studios. There’s only one episode out right now (as of January 26, 2026) but more are coming in the future.

I was a little wary of the series at first; it’s inspired by Genesis and other ancient texts, and the pilot episode introduced some concepts that made me uneasy (Namay’ah, the alchemist princess, and her actions). However, after more research, I started to understand the story a little more and see how Gabriel and the Guardians is pointing to Our Creator, Yahweh, and realized I had misunderstood the story, which is pointing to Ehy’eh (the name God used when talking to Moses) and shows us a world where most people have forgotten the truth.

They also have a Discord Server and the first episode is available to stream for free (with a free account) on Angel Studios.

The series isn’t just for Christians; non-Christians can enjoy it too! I actually reviewed the first episode of the series on my blog; here’s the link.

Finding God in Anime: A Christian Anime Devotional

Finding God in Anime is a devotional anthology for otakus compiled by Moriah Jane and Laura A. Grace. There are currently three installments in the series, and I was actually a contributor to the third volume linked here (this is not sponsored and I don’t make money off of Amazon sales).

There are tons of devotionals in each of the three volumes written by a wide variety of authors. I have not read every devotional but I appreciate what Moriah Jane and Laura A. Grace are doing, and I am thrilled that I was able to be a part of the most recent volume.

Moriah Jane is also an author of many other books, including some fiction series. Here is a link to her on Amazon; I haven’t gotten the chance to read her novels yet, but I am hoping to in the future.

Laura A. Grace

Laura A. Grace is a YouTuber & writer for Beneath the Tangles. She co-created Finding God in Anime with Moriah Jane. She posts videos about shojo manga frequently. Geeks Under Grace covers everything geeky: anime, movies, books, table top games, video games, etc. Writing from a faith-based perspective, Geeks Under Grace has so many reviews about so many topics. They’re a fantastic resource if you are looking for a review on a specific title.

Ryleigh Welina

Ryleigh is a Christian anime fan & creator who posts about Christianity and anime on Instagram. She also has a community of believers on Discord who do Bible studies together.

Anime Relatable

Anime Relatable is a YouTube channel striving to “…shake up the anime game by Taking our favorite anime characters and relating them to our everyday experience.” He has a wide variety of videos on anime and Christianity.

Christian VTubers

A VTuber is a creator who uses an animated avatar instead of themselves. Basically, VTubers create an animated character that stands in for their real person. VTubers may create review videos, play video games, or even read the Bible on stream.

There are many Christian VTubers out there, and there are plenty who aren’t. I’m not a big VTuber watcher so I don’t really have any suggestions. Instead, I want to give some guidelines to consider when looking at VTubers:

  1. Do they claim to be followers of Christ? If so, does their conduct reveal the Fruit of the Spirit? Matthew 7:16 tells us “You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?” What fruit should we be looking for? Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
  2. What kind of content do they create? Does their content honor God (example: the kind of games they stream)?
  3. Do they do Bible study or bring God into their streams directly, or are they more subtle?
  4. Do they speak in a way that honors Christ?
  5. No one is perfect, but overall, does their social media reflect Christ? Are they willing to admit when they make mistakes? Do they strive to speak well of others? Do they spend their time engaging in useless controversies/arguments? Do they verbally attack others or do they respond with grace?
  6. What kind of avatar do they have? Is their avatar modest? Do they dress or look a way that may harm their witness for Christ?

Conclusion: Christian Anime Resources

Ultimately, we should consider whether each and every person we watch/listen to has the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23 (ESV) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”)

Honestly, if I ever show anything other than Christ’s fruit, I want to know so that I can improve.
